front yard organic garden

Look at this guy’s garden!

Edit July 20: The same guy talks organic pest control…

Longevity.

I finally decided I’d have a look at David Wolfe’s Longevity Now program. I read the sales page and then tried to search around for reviews (but all the google searches just seem to take me to affiliate pages :P ). I did come across Kevin Gianni’s blog post about the program though, and on the page is this informative talk:

Where to bike.

And Amsterdam:

And more here. (Sorry to all who follow for the repeat broadcast!)

What pesticides are you eating?

http://www.whatsonmyfood.org/

“What’s On My Food? is a searchable database designed to make the public problem of pesticide exposure visible and more understandable.”

Just passing the link along!

(Alright, so my updates lately are short and all linking to something.  Not much is going on except a bunch of wrapping things up.)

The Medicated Child.

A very thought-provoking documentary over at PBS, The Medicated Child explores issues of modern psychiatric treatment in the face of increasing diagnosis of bipolar in children. Is it possible to diagnose bipolar in children? Are children being overmedicated? Do medications really help? Is there a better way? Just some of the many questions the scientists, doctors, and parents are asking themselves and each other in this doc.

More Dr Fuhrman…

Health = Nutrients/Calories

Dr Fuhrman explains his diet, and offers up some case studies to see what is possible when one eats a high-nutrient-density diet.

I am very enthusiastic about his approach and only wish more people would see this video :)

Coke wants you to take your BPA and like it.

How completely shocked should we be when a major corporation plots to use rather unethical tactics in order to brainwash people into consuming a substance and believing that this substance is safe and even beneficial, when it has been proven to be very toxic?

I’m not sure the world should be shocked anymore.

Over at EWG, they’ve got the story:

“Coca-Cola, Alcoa, Del Monte, Crown, the American Chemistry Council, the North American Metal Packaging Alliance, Inc. and Grocery Manufacturers Association convened behind closed doors at Washington’s exclusive Cosmos Club and committed $500,000 to an effort to “prolong the life of BPA,” an integral plastics component estimated to generate more than $6 billion in global sales annually.

The chemical, used to harden polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins used as, among other things, food can linings, is a synthetic estrogen shown in more than 100 laboratory tests to disrupt the endocrine system, disrupt brain and reproductive system development and function and cause other serious conditions such as cancer, behavior and learning problems, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.”

It gets worse. The article goes on to describe the tactics these representatives were planning to use to accomplish this task, including:

“On a national level, the emails say, the lobbyists “suggested using fear tactics (e.g. “Do you want to have access to baby food anymore?”).”

As well, the emails show, they considered “focusing on the impact of BPA bans on minorities (Hispanic and African American) and poor “ by insinuating that without BPA, food prices would rise.”

I don’t really have to say anymore, I don’t think… Stop over at EWG.org for the full story.

Update: what I’m doing

Back in this entry, I discussed the Maffetone Method and that I planned to give it a go for 90 days. Well, that lasted about 8 days!

Instead, I’m into the second week of Couch-to-5k! This is more my thing. I used to run and it was/is the most exhilarating feeling. I’m modifying the the 9-week plan to be more like 12-14 weeks, just because I like to take a slower approach :) I do not have a desire for self-torture! And I’m really enjoying the short intervals of running – they don’t seem too tough and they make me feel like I’m progressing.

As well I am working through Kabat-Zinn’s 8-week meditation program (also described in the entry mentioned above). The first two weeks of the program are a 45-minute body scan 6 days/week. It’s rather nice, first thing in the morning, to get up, freshen up, then go back to bed and do the body scan :) Very relaxing! And by the end of it I am feeling rested and ready to hop on the treadmill. It’s a good start to the day.
